"TIPS"
1. Regular grooming should take place every 4-8 weeks for breeds like the
Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Bichon Frise, Poodle, Goldendoodle, Maltese, and
Cocker Spaniel. Other breeds like the Golden Retriever, German Shepherd,
Husky, Collie, Sheltie, and Pomeranian should be groomed every 3 months (12
weeks) on average. Regular grooming helps keep a dog's nails short, and its
coat mat-free and clean. Dogs will look and feel great!
2. Nails should be trimmed at least once a month to help keep the "quicks"
short (the "quick" is the vein in the nail). It is time to trim your pet's
nails if you hear them clicking on your floor. The more often the nails are
clipped, the shorter they stay.
3. To help keep your pet mat-free, use a slicker brush. Lift your pet's coat
so you can see the skin, and start brushing in layers. Brushing only the top
of the coat will not prevent matting underneath. Your pet's fur tends to mat
in areas where it is petted the most or where its collar/harness rubs, for
example, the neck, chest, legs, and backside. If you regularly brush these
areas, you will help both your groomer and your pet.
4. In most cases, severe matting can't be brushed out, but must be shaved
off. I always say: "humanity before vanity." Hair will grow back, and it is
not fair to put your dog through the pain and misery of trying to brush out
mats. This is time-consuming and labour-intensive work that is very hard on
a groomer's hands and arms, often causing medical conditions that may later
require surgery.
"SHOP ETIQUETTE"
1. I do not allow owners to stay while their pets are being groomed. Your
presence is a distraction, and often causes pets to misbehave. When you are
not present, I am able to connect with your dog one-on-one, and develop my
own relationship with him/her. The grooming process also goes a lot faster
when I can focus entirely on your pet.
2. If you are nervous about bringing your dog to the groomer, your dog will
often sense this and mimic your emotions. PLEASE DO NOT comfort a nervous,
growling, or hostile dog, because your pet will learn that these behaviors
are acceptable. I can often get injured when pets have been rewarded for
dangerous or unwanted behavior. Instead, please praise your pet when it is
in a calm, submissive state. Ignore unwanted behavior, and reward good
behavior: it may take time, but it will work!
3. Dogs are
not permitted to stay at the shop all day. I do not have the space and it's
distracting for my other dogs on the table. They must be picked up when
called.
4. I always recommend that you pre-book your next appointment, because I
cannot guarantee that I will have a spot for you when it is time to have
your pet groomed again.
"APPOINTMENT COURTESY"
Please be on time for all your appointments, or at least 5 minutes early if
you have anything you wish to discuss about your pet.
1. If you know you will be late, please let me know as soon as possible, so
that I don't worry, or I don't bump the next appointment to an earlier time.
If you arrive half an hour late for your appointment, I will not groom your
dog at that time. You must reschedule your dog's appointment.
2. If you fail to show up for your appointment, there will be a $15 charge
added to your next appointment when you make it. It's just common courtesy
to acknowledge the lost revenue of missed appointments.
3. I like specifics. I also like my canine clients leaving my shop looking
their best. Please be as clear as possible about what you want, so I know
exactly what you want. And if you have a question or a concern about your
pet's grooming, then please let me know. I have access to a
variety of shampoos, and tools and techniques, and am happy to work with you
to tailor your pet's grooming and "look" to what you want and need.
4. If you are sensitive to scents, please let me know in advance.
